Every ghost has a story to tell

The last place Tansy Piper wants to be is stuck in Cedar Canyon, Texas, in the middle of nowhere, with a bunch of small-town kids. But when her mother decides to move to the desolate West Texas town, Tansy has no choice but to go along. Once there, Tansy is immediately drawn to the turret of their rickety old house, a place she soon learns has a disturbing history. But its the strange artifacts she finds in the cellar–a pocket watch, a journal of poetry, and a tiny crystal–that have the most chilling impact on her.

Tansy soon finds that through the lens of her camera, she can become part of a surreal black-and-white world where her life is intertwined with that of mysterious, troubled Henry, who lived in the same house and died decades earlier. It seems their lives are linked by fate and the artifacts she found, but as Tansy begins spending more and more time in the past, her present world starts to fade away. Tansy must untangle herself from Henry’s dangerous reality– before she loses touch with her own life forever.

>Author Interview and Contest with Suzanne Selfors

> Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Susanne Selfors, author of several YA and middle grade books. Her newest Young Adult book, MAD LOVE recently hit the book shelves and I am happy to inform you that I have an autographed copy to give away. So, sit back relax and take some time to get to know about MAD LOVE and it’s author. Then enter my contest to win a signed copy of MAD LOVE.

RR: Hello Suzanne, and thank you for this interview. Last year I read COFFEHOUSE ANGEL and this year you have a new novel, MAD LOVE for YA readers to enjoy. Can you tell me what this new book is about?
SS: It’s a dark romantic comedy about a teen girl named Alice Amorous whose mother is a famous romance writer. When her mother is secretly hospitalized for bi-polar disorder, Alice tries to write her mom’s next romance novel, with the unsolicited help of a weird boy who claims to be Cupid. That’s the plot in a nutshell. But what it’s also about is Love in all its shapes and sizes.

RR: MAD LOVE is a story that is centered on Mental Illness i.e. Biopolar Disorder . What inspired you to write this particular story?
SS: Well, I wouldn’t say that it’s “centered” on mental illness. This is not an issues book. Bipolar disorder just happens to be one of the things that is complicating Alice’s life. I have always been intrigued by manic and depressive behavior, having suffered from a bout of severe depression when I was in college and having grown up with a father who was very manic and who medicated with alcohol.

RR: Are you a fan of clam juice? and what made you decide that it was the drink of choice for your storyline?
SS: I don’t know why I chose it. Just seemed weird.

RR: What kind of research did you have to prepare for MAD LOVE?
SS: I went back and read all I could about Cupid and Psyche. I also read a lot about bipolar disorder. When I wrote the first draft I was still calling it manic-depression, but that’s the old term.

RR. Who was your favorite character in MAD LOVE and why?
SS:I often get attached to my secondary characters. I really like Archibald, the gay roommate. He’s such a kind soul and he’s the one who reminds Alice that we should never place more value on what other people think of us than on what we think of ourselves.

RR: What do you want your readers to take away from your book?
SS: Firstly, I hope they were entertained. That’s the most important thing to me. I want my books to help people escape for a few hours, maybe laugh a little, enjoy the time. If there’s a message drifting amongst the chapters it’s this: That love in all its colors is always swirling around you, you just have to open your heart to it.

RR: What are you in the process of writing next?
SS:My next kids’ book comes out in May and its called Smells Like Treasure. And I’m finishing up the first draft of my next YA book, out in 2012. It’s a fairy tale.
RR: What is on your nightstand now?
SS:I’m reading a Finnish book called Year of the Hare.
RR: What is the best way for a reader to find you i.e. facebook/twitter/blog?
SS:Best way is through my website, I love getting reader letters and try to answer each one. I’m on facebook too.

RR: Thank you, for this great interview and I hope to see you again. It has been a pleasure as always.
SS:You’re welcome! Thank you!

>CONTEST and BANNED BOOKS WEEK September 25th-October 2nd 2010

By Ellen Hopkins

To you zealots and bigots and false
patriots who live in fear of discourse.
You screamers and banners and burners
who would force books
off shelves in your brand name
of greater good.

You say you’re afraid for children,
innocents ripe for corruption
by perversion or sorcery on the page.
But sticks and stones do break
bones, and ignorance is no armor.
You do not speak for me,
and will not deny my kids magic
in favor of miracles.

You say you’re afraid for America,
the red, white and blue corroded
by terrorists, socialists, the sexually
confused. But we are a vast quilt
of patchwork cultures and multi-gendered
identities. You cannot speak for those
whose ancestors braved
different seas.

You say you’re afraid for God,
the living word eroded by Muhammed
and Darwin and Magdalene.
But the omnipotent sculptor of heaven
and earth designed intelligence.
Surely you dare not speak
for the father, who opens
his arms to all.

A word to the unwise.
Torch every book.
Char every page.
Burn every word to ash.
Ideas are incombustible.
And therein lies your real fear.

I think this poem that Ellen Hopkins penned last year for BANNED BOOKS WEEK speaks volume’s and I feel it fits perfectly for this contest honoring this author and BANNED BOOKS WEEK 2010.

Please fill out a contest entry form HERE for a signed copy of CRANK, GLASS and FALLOUT. This contest is open for 2 weeks ending October 10th at midnight PST

HERE is a map that shows you where all the BANNED BOOKS are located in the states and which books are banned. Check and see if one of your favorites books is listed.

Book Synopses:

Hush, HushIn paperback September 21

A sacred oath, a fallen angel, a forbidden love.

Nora Grey has had a rough year. Her father was murdered and as a result, her mother had thrown herself into work, leaving Nora alone most of the time in their secluded farmhouse. Despite this, she manages to be a very good girl, never missing school, never even driving without permission.

But when the transfer student, Patch, gets assigned as her lab partner in biology, from the moment the two are together, there’s an inescapable magnetism that draws Nora deeper and deeper into his dark world. When she discovers the enormous V-shaped scars on his back, she discovers that there is a battle going on between the fallen and the immortal. And she’s the object.

The magnetism she feels is now more inescapable than ever.

CrescendoAvailable October 19

The sequel to the New York Times Best selling phenomenon, Hush, Hush!

Nora should have know her life was far from perfect. Despite starting a relationship with her guardian angel, Patch (who, title aside, can be described anything but angelic), and surviving an attempt on her life, things are not looking up. Patch is starting to pull away and Nora can’t figure out if it’s for her best interest or if his interest has shifted to her arch-enemy Marcie Millar. Not to mention that Nora is haunted by images of her father and she becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to him that night he left for Portland and never came home.

The farther Nora delves into the mystery of her father’s death, the more she comes to question if her Nephilim blood line has something to do with it as well as why she seems to be in danger more than the average girl. Since Patch isn’t answering her questions and seems to be standing in her way, she has to start finding the answers on her own. Relying too heavily on the fact that she has a guardian angel puts Nora at risk again and again. But can she really count on Patch or is he hiding secrets darker than she can even imagine?
